
My Name is: Jan Williamson
I Play at: Different places! I’m in private practice part of the week, I see children in a non-profit agency for families who have experienced domestic violence part of the week, and I occasionally teach as an adjunct for the VCU School of Social Work. I am also a consultant with international programs working with the psychosocial needs of children and families during the emergency phase of large scale disasters (refugees, armed conflict, natural disasters and HIV/AIDS).
My Favorite Play Therapy Technique: Use of the sand tray for both children and families.
My favorite Play Therapy Book: I’m particularly fond of the Vivian Gussin Paely books “You Can’t Say, You can’t Play, Boys and Girls, Super Heros in the Doll Corner, The Boy Who Would be a Helicopter.
I Learned to Play at: I have a Masters in clinical psychology (Lone Mt. College/California) and a Masters of social work (VCU). I’m licensed as an LCSW (VA) and as an MFT (Calif). and I ‘m currently working on completing my hours for certification in play therapy.
My Favorite Play Therapy Tool: Sand tray, art work and children’s dreams.
